The Golden Rainforest Comes Ashore

On the windward coast, you smell it before you see it. Not the clean iodine of low tide but something heavier and more organic, a sulfur note that gets into the back of the throat and stays there. Then you come over the rise and the sea has changed color at its edge. Where the water should thin into that pale, nervous green, there is instead a brown mass three feet deep and moving like something breathing, lifting and settling with the swell, packed so tight against the sand that the waves arrive muffled.
The fishermen call it weed. Its proper name is sargassum, and almost nothing about it belongs on a beach.
There are around one hundred and fifty species in the genus, but the two drifting past our islands — Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans — are unusual among seaweeds in that they never touch bottom at all. They are holopelagic: born floating, living floating, dying floating. No holdfast, no rooting stone, no season of rest on a reef. They keep themselves up with small gas-filled bladders, break apart in rough water, and regrow from the pieces. A mat of sargassum in open ocean is not debris. It is one of the few pieces of furniture in an otherwise empty room.
That is why the Sargasso Sea — the calm gyre east of the Bahamas, the only sea on earth with no coastline — has been called a golden floating rainforest. More than a hundred species of fish shelter in it, and over a hundred and forty kinds of invertebrate, some found nowhere else. Loggerhead hatchlings that leave the beaches of Florida drift out into that weed and hide inside it for years, small enough to be picked off by any frigate bird, safe only because the mat is thick. Dolphinfish, wahoo, kingfish, billfish — the ones we chase, the ones we eat — begin as juveniles under that same brown ceiling. When Columbus's crews sailed through it in 1492 they were frightened of it, convinced they would run aground on grass in the middle of the ocean.
So the seaweed is not a villain. What has changed is the arithmetic.
The Belt
Before 2011, sargassum on Caribbean sand was a tideline curiosity — drifty bits, a brown seam you stepped over. That year it arrived in quantities nobody had a category for, meters deep in places, and it has kept arriving. Satellites have since mapped what scientists at the University of South Florida named the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt: a band of floating algae that at its peak reaches roughly five thousand miles, from the coast of West Africa across to the Gulf. It is seasonal, cresting most years in June, and it is growing. In 2025 the belt reached a record of about 37.5 million metric tons. By June 2026, the University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Laboratory recorded another near-record season, with the Gulf alone holding 5.0 million metric tons — nearly double its previous high — and the Caribbean Sea at levels never before measured.
Why is still being worked out. Chuanmin Hu, the optical oceanographer who has spent years watching the belt from space, points to a combination of ocean warming, nutrients arriving from more than one source, and the fact that the mats themselves attract organisms — nitrogen-fixing bacteria among them — that feed further growth. Fertilizer running out of great rivers, dust off the Sahara, a warmer surface ocean: the belt is fed by things happening thousands of miles from any beach it ruins.
On the ground the effect is not abstract. In Tobago the arrivals have hit Pinfold Bay and Barbados Bay, Speyside and King's Bay, Goldsborough, Little Rockley Bay, the shoreline at Scarborough. Fishermen wade out through cold, waist-deep mats before dawn to reach their boats, and foul their engines when they get there. Piled and rotting, sargassum releases hydrogen sulfide — that smell — which drives people out of houses within sight of the water. In the shallows it blocks light and smothers seagrass and coral, and it can lay a wall across the one short crossing a hatchling turtle has to make.

What Is Being Made Of It
The islands are not waiting to be rescued. In Mexico, Sargablock presses harvested seaweed into building blocks — roughly forty percent sargassum, cured a few hours in the sun. In Puerto Rico, Carbonwave cold-presses it into agricultural biostimulants now used on maize, tomatoes, grapes; others are working on biogas, cosmetics, leather substitutes. Grenada's government has committed to converting ten thousand tons into product. None of this stops the belt. What it does is refuse the only other available posture, which is to stand on a ruined beach and be a victim of somebody else's runoff.
That is the part I keep returning to. We did not send this. But the drift line is a ledger, and it is legible: warmer water, more nitrogen, a plant doing exactly what abundance tells a plant to do. The sea is not delivering garbage to our shores. It is delivering arithmetic, and it has chosen, as it always does, the coast with the least say in the sum.
